===Correspondence===
''OK. Horacio and I think if you want to measure the Anaktuvuk tomorrow
afternoon that would be fantastic & very helpful. Hope you are not
joking. Attached is a map and diagram of what we did today, it might
help you find a route through the mess. It is SUPER braided
everywhere and there is flow through the floodplain (over bank full)
as of today. Kind of tricky. We just did LONG downstream diagaonal
slow drifting transect, except in the super fast parts we had to use
the motor and then had some cavitation at the sensor, but it wasn't
too bad. We have a permanent GPS base station set up at the river if
you want to tie into that for RTK. Ken will have to clue you in on
the radio address.
The boat is ready to go and there are life jackets in the culvert but
we have the rover GPS set up and the antennae and GPS poles for
mounting.
We only have 1 tape down spot left located just to the north of the
ISCO sampler (TP4) w/ yellow flagging if you can get a tapedown during
the measuremnt. Beware of that area because there is alot of rebar
there and then there is a steep drop off where the main cutbank is (it
is submerged) There is a higher terrace also, but don't get close to
that in the vicinity of the station or you will puncture your boat! on
all the junk above the lower terrace.
Email us in the a.m. if you think you are going to do it and let us
know if you want us to call you. You have our sat phone numbers also,
but we usually don't have them close to us. We'll be at the Chandler,
either at the culverts or at the lower station (located 0.5 miles
downstream across from "Ice Jam Island") most of the day. At the
lower station we have to do some repairs and surveying, the tape down
area got trashed by the jam and there is a 25 foot ice pan right at
our PT area. I think Horacio will get over to the Anaktuuvk to survey
and do water levels later in the day.
Yes there is stuff to hose clamp onto (GPS over the ADCP on the ADCP pipe, but you'll need a small
pole, and another pipe to clamp the antennae to (separate from the GPS pole).

You would need everything except a base station, which we have up and
running, Ken can send you the info.

You'll need to bring your adcp, battery, and rover GPS setup (w/
antennae and a GPS pole) in the boat. I don't think we have a
battery out there, but maybe we can drop one off because Horacio needs
to swing by and pick up the suspended sediment profiler thing there in
the a.m., so maybe he can drop a battery there.

No GPS scripts changed. THe only think we did was change some settings
on the radios, which Ken will clue you in on.

You might want to bring your rio grande with the 1 1/2 " flange and
top plate already attached. I leave it on all the time and just pop
off the set screws and take the whole ADCP + flange + plate with me.
There is an allen wrench attached the frame, but you might want a
spare. THere are some hose clamps for set up but you might want a nut
driver. Range finder, GPS/radio, etc. There is a big rope that looks
like a boa constrictor in the culvert if you need it.

There is less than half a tank of gas (according to Rob). We have
gone out for 2 days and today we were out there alot w/ the sediment
work so you should be okay, but maybe we can bring a can out for you
if Horacio goes out there to get the sediment profiler thing.

===Tasks===

====Toolik Prep====
* More PT rebars for water measurements
* bring memory card for plant cam
* bring out bubble level for surveying again
* get survey gear from Joel (re: our broken rod)
* extra hardware for cataraft
* ADCP & other related instruments in trailer
* 5horse gas tank
** Everything is on site
* GPS Survey GPS Master #1 Rebar #1 (& identify it with spray paint maybe?)
* Paint top of culvert
* Standard aerial pictures of gaging cross-section
* Track down TSCe

====Itkillik River Crossing====
* Standard aerial pictures @ Bridge crossing
** Digital Camera
* Plant Cam Setup
** change out memory card
* ADCP Measurement
** Sediment sample mid-river during measurement

For the mid river sampling, you should use a plastic bottle and get a grab sample during the discharge measurement (i.e., just one sample per day). Just put the bottle as deep as you can (with your hands) and collect the water. Please write the time.

* Set up Cataraft
* pound in screed stakes / rebar
* water level measurement
* Setup isco:

I believe you guys will focus your activities near the crossing. I suggest to put the ISCO there too. You should try to fix the end of the tube (where the water enters the tube) to a rebar. The rebar could be near the bank (as long as it is located in moving waters). We don't want to capture any bed sediment. Any distance above 30 cm from the bottom (river bed) and 20 cm below the top (water surface) would work. Set the sampler to take 4 samples per day. You should collect samples at 3 AM, 9AM, 3 PM and 9 PM (four in a day).

===Tools===
* survey tripod at Kanex or in Lab4
* sledge (in helicopter)

===Things to do yet in Toolik===
* Follow up on Ken's email about other station work
====Email 1: Station Maintenance for Itkillik River Crew 5/9/2011 @ 5:14 PM====

Itkillik River:
I have a case w/ 3 HOBO PTs for the Itkillik River for upstream and
downstream slope. Two of them are set to record 15 minute intervals
starting 5/13/11 at 5:00pm. One is a spare and has not been launched,
and can be used if all else fails. There is also the correct
launch/reader in the case this time.

You will also have to install 2 SDI12 PTs because the current ones are
locked in ice. 1 should be 15psig (older unit) and 1 should be a new
5 psig sensor.

You will also have to replace the station barometric pressure ASAP
when you get to the site, because I couldn't make anything of the old
data, it seems to be bad. Barometric pressure is needed for
correction with the HOBO sensors.

Please download camera images and any historic camera images saved to
the camera.

Other station maintenance includes:
Upper May Creek: Tipping bucket / windshield repair, download camera images
Itikmalakpak: Tipping bucket / windshield repair, download camera images

And as always, if the fence needs repair, please try and fix it up.

====Email 2: to do: PTs 5/9/2011 @ 5:05 PM====

Gather 2 PTs from downstairs in 106 to go to Itkillik River. Get 2
with the shortest cable lengths because the station is close to the
river and so we shouldn't need the 250 ft cable length (unless that is
all that is available than that is all we have). Ask Rob which one
you can take and then obtain the calibration information from Rob for
that particular serial number. Make sure they are labeled at the
wiring end and have a dessicant pack. Make sure you obtain a
working sensor because apparently 1-2 were not working.

Then, in my office there is a box from instruments northwest, Inc.
Open the box. Put a label on at the wiring end that says the Serial
Number, 5 PSIG (verify from calibration sheet), the cable length (all
should be 250 ft), and the SDI12 Address which is located on the
calibration sheet. Include one of the new 5 PSIG in the Itkillik
River package.

We will have 3 PTs for the Itkillik River, 1 5-PSIG, 1 15-PSIG, and 1
15 PSIG backup.

Then we will have to make sure all the PTs have conduit for
protection, so if the old ones don't come see me. We will have grab
some conduit / pipe / reducers etc. for the new 5 psi PT.

====Email 3: Fwd: survey check out equipment 5/9/2011 @ 12:14PM====

You can pick up your optical level, survey rod, and tripod from
Horacio for the Itkillik River group.

====Emily 4: Leaving for Toolik May 7, 2011 at 12:24 PM====

I agree w/ Bill that the Toolik group could use an extra day or so for
field prep in Fairbanks. However, if you do get there ahead of
breakup you could get the station repairs (closest to Toolik) finished
early (instead of at the end). There are a few things that must get
done on this trip, about 3 stations close to Toolik (via helicopter)
need some repairs that could take about a day or two of work. So
far the temps have been cool right now, but some stations to the south
are warming up to about freezing (temps don't stay above freezing at
night though). You can look at the station data here & webcams:
http://ine.uaf.edu/werc/projects/umiat_corridor/stations.html   I
think Upper May Creek is our furthest south station and will tell you
what the air temperatures are like in the upper Itkillik basin. It
would be great if Bob B. sets up the monitoring webpage so we can look
at AT and Windspeed and camera images again.

====Emily 5: Ice descriptions Apr 29, 2011 at 12:22 PM====

A few of you asked about ice descriptions in a meeting awhile back.
This is a handy little document that I came across at a presentation a
few years ago:

Pilots Guide to River Ice by the National Weather Service.

http://aprfc.arh.noaa.gov/resources/rivwatch/rwp_handbook.pdf

It has photos of the ice features and definitions you may find helpful.

Useful terms to describe the ice size are sheets, pans, chunks. Other
features are ice runs (continuous length of moving ice) & ice jams
(note page 5 describing ice jams).

GPS coordinates and a description in your field book would be helpful.
Measurements of ice dimensions w/ a tape measure would also be
helpful. Other things to note are anchor or bottom fast ice and
shore ice. When does it all disappear from the channel, particularly
at the gauging reach?

====Doug Email: Report Mar 30, 2011 at 9:09 AM====

Emily, I am working on the report and will finish it today. I'll be
back on Friday. One thing we definitely need to do this breakup is to
take pictures at the proposed bridge crossings. The strategy would be
to take pictures both upstream and downstream each day, hopefully from
approximately from the same position (horizontally and vertically).
Maybe a couple from same horizontal position, but at different
elevations.  Doug
* Put Logger?
* Need a logger for West Dock

* Sagwon Hill met station

Highest priority, when you're passing by. This ought to be
reachable by radio, and I'll try to check the server settings
to try to get there.

If the battery voltage is healthy (e.g., 12.5 or higher), then
please set Flag 1 on the CR10X logger. To do this with the keypad,
use *6 to view input locations, then hit either 0 or D, followed by
1. One of those (0 or D) shows the flags from left to right, the
other shows the ports from right to left. Hitting 1 should toggle
either flag 1 (left-most value) or port 1 (right-most value). Flag
1 is the 'radio hold' flag, and will leave the radio powered up all
the time as long as the voltage is high enough.

I seriously need a mnemonic to remember which of 0 or D is for flags
vs ports...

* Franklin Bluffs met and snowfence

I think the met station is ok, just not downloading all the time due
to the distance and lack of a decent repeater. We have had contact
with the snowfence logger recently, but just not a strong connection.

I think Sveta may have trip to these sites fairly soon, but if you
have time and are inspired to do some troubleshooting, it might be
good to check out the snowfence logger system.

* Upper Kuparuk river gauging site

I don't know the status of this one; if it's there and active we
should be able to download data from it via radio. I'll check the
servers on this end.

* Imnavait Creek, former flume/weir site

This was removed, right?

* Put River gauge site

I think perhaps you have a logger to go there, but I think no
radio as yet. A radio could be added later if desired, or sooner
if you get inspired and want to have remote access to the data.

* Betty Pingo met

Don't know what's up with this. I presume it's working but we haven't
heard from it in some time. I'll check the server settings...

* West Dock met

This one needs a CR10X logger. The logger program can be found
online, see logger.dld in the site_directory_view link at:

http://ine.uaf.edu/werc/projects/NorthSlope/coastal_plain/west_dock/current.html

I don't know what the priorities are on this one, but at least
if you're in Prudhoe and needing something to do it should be
relatively easy to get it online. I think there should be a
CR10X at Toolik that could be loaded with the program.

A few sites are of lower priority and would involve a hike to reach:

* Sagwon Summit repeater

This repeater has not been heard from in years, presumably dead
for unknown reasons. It is visible from the Sagwon Hill parking
area (with the outhouse), and is on the highest point of land in
the area.

* Upper Imnavait met, or snowfence control site (Sveta's site)

This site ought to be working, and I'll try to check the server.
I connected a healthy pair of batteries in April.

* Upper Kuparuk ridge repeater/camera, aka Island Lake

This site is unusual in its configuration, and I see that the
radio at least is working. Probably something I can fix remotely...
===Pretrip Notes===
====Email 1: Station Maintenance for Itkillik River Crew 5/9/2011 @ 5:14 PM====

====Email 2: to do: PTs 5/9/2011 @ 5:05 PM====

====Email 3: Fwd: survey check out equipment 5/9/2011 @ 12:14PM====

You can pick up your optical level, survey rod, and tripod from
Horacio for the Itkillik River group.

====Emily 4: Leaving for Toolik May 7, 2011 at 12:24 PM====

====Emily 5: Ice descriptions Apr 29, 2011 at 12:22 PM====

====Doug Email: Report Mar 30, 2011 at 9:09 AM====

Maybe a couple from same horizontal position, but at different
elevations.  Doug

====Email 3: Fwd: survey check out equipment 5/9/2011 @ 12:14PM====

You can pick up your optical level, survey rod, and tripod from
Horacio for the Itkillik River group.

====Emily 4: Leaving for Toolik May 7, 2011 at 12:24 PM====

====Emily 5: Ice descriptions Apr 29, 2011 at 12:22 PM====

====Doug Email: Report Mar 30, 2011 at 9:09 AM====

Maybe a couple from same horizontal position, but at different
elevations.  Doug
starting 5/13/11 at 5:00pm.

====Email 2: to do: PTs 5/9/2011 @ 5:05 PM====

====Email 3: Fwd: survey check out equipment 5/9/2011 @ 12:14PM====

You can pick up your optical level, survey rod, and tripod from
Horacio for the Itkillik River group.

====Emily 4: Leaving for Toolik May 7, 2011 at 12:24 PM====

====Emily 5: Ice descriptions Apr 29, 2011 at 12:22 PM====

====Email 1: Station Maintenance for Itkillik River Crew 5/9/2011 @ 5:14 PM====

1 should be 15psig (older unit) and 1 should be a new
Please download camera images and any historic camera images saved to
Upper May Creek: Tipping bucket / windshield repair, download camera images
Itikmalakpak: Tipping bucket / windshield repair, download camera images
