Wiring

Common Sensor Wiring

Meteorological

Air Temperature / Relative Humidity Sensors: Current AT/RH Sensor, Older AT/RH Sensor
Wind Speed / Wind Direction (top sensor on the met tower): RM Young Wind Monitor
Wind Speed (often 1m or 3m sensor) MetOne Anemometer, Taylor Instruments WS & WD (for extreme environments)
Another commonly used Wind Direction sensor: MetOne Wind Direction
Snow Depth Most common, yr2007+ model
Precipitation: Texas Electronics Tipping Bucket, Wyoming gage with pressure transducer

Radiation

 Net Radiation Rebs Q7.1
Shortwave Radiation Eppley PSP or Eppley PSP-2
Longwave Radiation Eppley PIR, PIR Battery-less operation

Subsurface

Soil Moisture: Current Soil Moisture, Older Soil Moisture
 TDR Soil Moisture: TDR system
Soil Temperature: Department made thermistor strings. Installed thermistors include Alpha and YSI and US Sensor

  • Common Subsurface Sensors
Soil Moisture installed horizontally at 5cm, 10cm, 15cm, 25cm, 40cm, 55cm, 85cm, 100cm (usually at least two sensors per profile)
Soil Surface Temperature, 0 or 0.5 cm below ground surface
 Soil Temperature (6 thermistors A) 2.5cm, 5cm, 10cm, 15cm, 20cm, 25cm
 Soil Temperature (6 thermistors B) 5cm, 15cm, 30cm, 50cm, 85cm, 100cm
 Soil Temperature (12 thermistor A) 2.5cm, 5cm, 10cm, 15cm, 20cm, 25cm, 35cm, 50cm, 75cm, 100cm, 125cm, 150cm
 Soil Temperature (12 thermistor B) 10cm, 25cm, 50cm, 75cm, 100cm, 125cm, 150cm, 200cm, 250cm, 300cm, 350cm, 400cm

Came across a WMO document. They suggest minimum standard soil temperature profile depths:

5cm, 10cm, 20cm, 50cm, and 100cm below ground surface and the surface should be similar for an area of 75cm^2 above the profile. WMO uses a bare ground standard which isn't really applicable but the rest of the information seems useful.
