Starting with south facing high hillslope site.

Oh, we need to figure out if there is any money left to spend to get up to $5,000 per site. If yes, cable protection should be purchased.

To Bring Tools:

  • jack hammer & gas (chipping out SM pit)
  • Shovels (at least 2) -- snow removal from pit and tripod area
  • compass (make sure SP is south-facing)
  • hand maul (for pounding in pins & stakes)
  • Voltmeter
  • tool bag
  • round file
  • cordless drill
    • extra battery
    • both charged
    • screwdriver for a couple of tripod bits
  • long drill bit for SM
  • short drill bit for 107 probe
  • short drill bit for punching holes in the actionpacker for instrumentation
  • 7/16" nut driver
  • 7/16" wrench
  • 5/16" nut driver
  • CSI screw driver
  • Snow Shoes
  • Sled or three
  • GPS
  • Poles for sled
  • ear protection
  • sunglasses
  • bike stereo?
  • longhandled pruning shears
  • keypad

To Purchase:

  • Another drill bit for SM,
  • One for ST

To Bring Site Related:

  • Sap Flow stuff
  • Screed stakes (3 pcs) (for precip setup)
  • 12" Pins (I can't remember what I called these on the shopping page)
  • Hose Clamps
  • 12V Battery
  • Solar Panel
  • Needed bolts for 12V Batteries

To Bring from home (Bob Busey):

  • Drill bit for instrumentation holes
  • GPS
  • Breaker Bar
  • Pruning Shears

To Do:

  1. Snow shoe gear to site via sled
  2. Make a snow SWE & Depth measurement?
  3. Clear ground near SM Pit of snow but be sure not to walk up the hill from the pit.
  4. Chip out SM Pit, put organic lid on one tarp and the excavated dirt on another. (And snow? Bob and I talked I just can't remember again...)
    1. Drill 4 holes for SM
    2. Drill 2 holes for ST
    3. Label with electrical tape both ends of the SM & ST (install @ 5cm bgs and 40 cm bgs)
      1. Orange = 5 cmbgs
      2. Blue = 40 cmbgs
  5. Do Sap Stuff & label wires
  6. Put together Tripod:
    1. Put legs back on the 2x12 -> 7/16 Nut Driver or wrench
      1. Cone nut / Regular Washer / 1" x 1/4 Bolt -> 2x per leg (2 legs)
    2. Mount cross arm on legs -> 7/16 Nut Driver or wrench
      1. Cone nut / Fender Washer / 1" x 1/4 Bolt -> 1x per leg (2 legs)
    3. Mount SP to cross arm -> 7/16 Nut Driver or wrench
      1. Cone nut / Fender Washer / 1" x 1/4 Bolt -> 1x per leg (2 legs)
    4. Mount 90degree unistrut angle to 2x12 with #2 Phillips & Cordless Drill
      1. Wood Screw / Fender Washer / Unistrut Angle
    5. Pound 12" Galvanized spike through square washers and 90degree unistrut angles, then into the ground (2 unistrut legs, 1 2x12) using the hand maul or sledge hammer.
    6. Hoseclamp AT Pole to cross arm w/ 5/16" Nut Driver
    7. Inside Actionpacker work:
      1. Secure wooden backpanel to 2x12 w/ 2 wood screws & #2 Phillips cordless screwdriver
      2. Drill holes in clear tote and actionpacker for instrumentation (enough 1/2" holes for what is out there plus precip)
      3. Use round file if needed to clean up any drilled holes
      4. Wire sensors to data logger
        1. See wiring page / program
        2. Print Program & Bring-with
      5. Put battery in box
      6. Wire battery to charge controller w/ 1/2" nut driver
