Overview

The met station at Toolik needs to be transferred from its tripod to a tower. The field requirements for this assignment will be outlined here.

Any other information not here but could be anticipated as being useful?

  • Where is the CGR4 going / is there a spot for it already on the radiation stand?

Random info

After you get to camp, ask the staff to fill up the truck with gas and this should go on the 'STAFF Account' because you are working as staff on this trip

Chad has agreed to give you tower training on Friday morning, the 17th.

To Bring from Fairbanks

  • Cabling to extend thermocouple temperature profile from old enclosure to new enclosure.
  • shovels for digging out buried cabling
  • extension cord for moving power from old tripod to new tower
  • cable splicing tools for anything that might need extending
    • soldering iron
    • butane
    • propane torch
    • solder
    • heat shrink
  • extra cabling
  • Toolbags
  • Extra data logger (CR1000, for any instruments that aren't transferred to the new logger on this trip and or don't reach... completely just a back up item)
  • small actionpacker
  • sled
  • Climbing harness
  • CGR4 Radiometer
    • Also bring Precision Resistor for measuring CGR4 Thermistor
    • Also need to update program with calibration constants for this sensor.

Current Equipment On-Site

  • New tower w/ enclosure & guy wires
  • Garden web cam
  • Pluvio 1 (Currently installed but broken)
  • Met Station w/ soil thermocouples, radiation, lake sensors on rusted tripod
  • New Multiplexer
  • Pluvio 2 (needs to be installed but is in the environmental data center)... has a different base than the existing one.
  • Pluvio 2 base is inside the wyoming gauge snow fence sitting on the ground

Goals

  • Mount recalibrated AT/RH sensors
  • Move power to the new enclosure
  • Transfer as much equipment as possible to new tower
  • Leave what can't be moved at the old site
  • Install Pluvio 2
    • note, pluvio 1 wire is a bit short. but should be okay with pluvio 2
  • Get evaporation pan working [maybe more like just inspect it to make sure it could work with the parts that were quoted from Campbell. Measure it's size, take pictures, and confirm model, if possible. If not, no worries. I'll work on it in June.
  • Install new radiometer
  • Tighten guy wires and level tower

Needs

  • Submit two TAs for Patrick and Bob so you can get a partial per diem and cover the gas money (Jessie is working on this)
  • TFS Site Wiring / cable lengths
  • List cable types needed ?
  • List muxes needed ?

List equipment/tools need to bring

  • Conduit
  • New Program (Bob Bu has draft) - Direct Link emailed 5/4/2013
    • Program Git Archive:
      • [Bob's DropBox]/logger_programs/toolik_tfs/TFScamp_CR3000.CR3
  • Troubleshoot Evaporation Pan
  • Figure out what needs calibration

Updates

  • Pluvio 1 and Pluvio 2 use different base stands. Make sure to include the Pluvio 2 mounting hardware!
  • Evaporation pan may not be in the budget this year if the gauging unit (Campbell 21531) needs to be replaced.
  • Conduit isn't an immediate priority since this depends on the final setup.
