Post Trip Notes

Teller Surveying

    • Reread John's email and compare coordinates
      • ~/Dropbox/uaf/GIS/2019 John Peterson
    • Note: measured from bottom rather than bumper. So, distance to ARP is 1.080 m for OPUS
    • Resurveyed all Stop signs... I am worrying I used wrong rover height. Like maybe it should have been 48.5" rather than what I specified.

Teller CAS

Teller CAS

  • Tripod Mast Bent
  • CNR4 difficult to level
  • Could use a some help keeping lower anemometer from moving. Like maybe a couple pieces of unistrut to keep arm from wobbling
  • Need to replace lower AT/RH as it seems completely broken.
    • Rotronic HygroClip2 HC2A
    • Should look to see if they sell a better top cap for it more resistant to moisture
  • Need to get some SW12V adapter to turn AT/RH on/off and look at program / wiring for other things that could be turned off.
  • Left 2 guy wire anchors and 100' of guy wire at UAF Storage. Could bring out more anchors or unistrut / nails or something. Maybe pound unistrut into ground and then pin in place?
  • I thought Geonor and Solar Panel would require guying but both survived the winter while tripod mast didn't.
  • I think snow sensor maybe failed over the winter, too.
  • I was thinking a heavier gauge cable for solar panel might be appropriate, too.

Nome CAS

    • Same suggestion for SW12V adapters
    • Perhaps bump up the # of batteries, too?
    • Another option would be to add the charge controller I have to monitor energy use?... or deploy at super site Geonor?

Teller Top

    • Site good I think.. will need to review data
    • Not quite 100% actually. Precip stand could use a bit of help but I can't remember what... ask Bob.
    • leveled precip bucket
    • replaced radiometer desiccant

Teller Bottom

    • Some of the Decagon sensors have failed but I found some spares in Nome storage. Might replace them in fall?
    • Look rest of data over.
    • bring out self-tapping screws and drill to add more help to keep tipping bucket from being removed.
    • leveled tipping bucket
    • replaced desiccant in radiometers

Teller SW

    • Look over data
    • finish working up creek discharge

NGEE Kougarok Site

    • precip good
    • need to verify peak directions and compass angles to lock in offset for anemometer.
    • replaced desiccant and leveled radiometers
    • most sensors looked good but a couple not, maybe SR50A and one or two of the decagon units.

Kougarok Met Tower

    • All data great I think but will need to process
    • replaced desiccant and leveled radiometers
    • leveled tipping bucket

Kougarok Burn Site

    • All data great I think but will need to process (only accessed by radio)

Kougarok Mauze Gulch Site

    • did not try to reach

Council Grid Site

    • Still need to redrill hole for thermistor
    • I see that soil moisture data is still working so will need to work that up
    • replaced antenna with yagi and new coax.
      • looks like now have a weak radio link again.
    • moved radio to main instrument box
    • made a temporary splice for precip cable and raised connection above inundation (hopefully)
      • expecting this will need to be redone before animals wander by

Skookum

    • switched back to array based OS
    • sent program which turns radio off more aggressively.
    • Site is re-integrated into near realtime system.

Bolton to bring from Fairbanks

Anchorage to buy

  • ubolts or hose clamps for precip stand leveling

To Bring / Not Packed

  • Drill & battery

Nome

UAF Storage

  • vehicle kit
  • bear spray
  • spare wiring cable for Council precip
  • hose clamps in one of the buried actionpackers
  • radio kit for Kougarok sites
  • guy wire anchors for Teller CAS
  • tool bag

NW Campus

  • Trimble batteries

NGEE Containers

  • pepper spray

Monday

Teller SW

  • Bring measured volume for salt slug measurement at Teller SW (the water jug for precip bucket calibration)
    • get correct amount of water in this then pour into the 1L volume.
    • need to do extra step of solving for in-situ variable.
  • Measure Discharge in creek with both wading rod & salt slug

Teller Bottom

  • tap & die the net radiometer
    • also bring a drill
  • step stool for site
  • replace radiometer desiccant
  • replace tipping bucket again and better secure new one
  • drill

Teller Top

  • change radiometer desiccant
  • ubolts or hose clamps for precip stand leveling
    • also might think on getting the bucket vertical pipe a bit higher off the ground... maybe a longer pipe?

Tuesday

Teller General

  • Survey Stop Signs

Teller CAS

  • bring out guy wires
  • guy wire cutter
  • correct amount of thimbles
  • guy wire anchors (all for the geonor)
  • look at program and think about using switched 12V for AT/RH... we will see in March trip if they should be turned off.
  • think about mounting a small SP on the tripod and running charging cables to battery box
  • think on a better way to do the solar panel... It might be that from the frame that came from China we mount that to unistrut and then that gets everything higher off the ground and more secure for winter winds etc.
  • re-check anemometer position

Nome CAS

  • see about ordering new batteries (this could be a see what the data looks like in March for the Teller CAS site if more batteries are necessary)

Wednesday

NGEE-Koug

  • change radiometer desiccant
  • check position of anemometer
  • leave a compass in the box

K2 met

  • Net radiometer stand bring out thimbles (guy wire is out there) for 7/16" size thimble (this is probably 1/4" or 5/16" wire rope)
  • level radiometers
  • replace radiometer desiccant

K3 Mauze

  • check level of radiometer
  • be prepared for some broken stuff (if this visit is broken into two days then could bring a number of things out to end of road and then only bring what is necessary on day two.
  • not sure why we could talk to radio but not site in 2018 remote visit.
    • Bring out an SC932A for between Logger and radio
K3 Shelved
  • new radiation tower for upwelling?
    • I'm thinking today that we could reuse the top pipe from the teller top site that is currently in storage to get the radiometers well above the canopy.

Kigluaiks (shelved?)

  • Bring out an SC932A for between logger and radio

Thursday

Skookum

  • change OS back to Array based
  • send program with more aggressive on/off to preserve winter battery
  • think about taking one of the batteries in storage out to the site

C1 Grid

  • bring out english allen wrench
  • bring out coax to replace radio to antenna connection
  • flip the snow depth pipe so old SR50 stub is up against tripod and mount radio antenna to it. Should be able to keep SR50A in about the same position
  • bring out tipping bucket replacement parts
    • no tips in 2018
    • could be loose cable or something worse. unclear.

Friday

  • Meet CAS team at Noonish
  • ship stuff back to Fairbanks?

Saturday

  • CAS Tour

Sunday

  • Leave
