Recalibration Inventory / Status

Tools

  • 5/16" nut driver
  • Torpedo level
  • A mix of allen wrenches (I can't recall offhand if english or metric is required to remove the sensor from the tower)
    • For the super site there is a toolbag with the proper allen wrench at the site in the shed (black bag).
  • MetOne special allen wrench (small one used to remove the cups from the sensor body)
  • Optional: a shopping bag or laptop bag to faciliate safely carrying instruments up and down the tower.

Supples

  • A newly recalibrated sensor.

Procedure

  • Take a new sensor body and wind cups out from the basement. If I'm doing 4 at a time I will usually drive the sensors inside their boxes out to the site (but of course I have tons of room in the minivan for this level of excess).
  • Out at the site, put the new / recalibrated sensor in a sack or computer bag. Both the sensor body and the cups.
  • grab the allen wrenches and nut driver and either put them in safely zipped pockets or in the sack/bag.
  • scale the tower to the proper level.
  • Use the 5/16" nut driver to loosen the three hoseclamps keeping the cross arm fixed in place.
    • The two small ones closest to the sensor are easy to loosen and let spin freely.
    • The larger one on the north side of the cross arm be careful. It is near the maximum opening diameter. Loosen it a bit more but not all the way off as it is hard to reconnect.
  • Put left hand on the north side large hose clamp and the right hand on the cross arm at a comfortable position for pushing.
  • Push and rotate the cross arm north with the right hand while using the left hand to keep the large hoseclamp in the north from binding on the cross arm. It is a slow and tedious process but eventually you will have the sensor on the south side of the tower close enough you can reach with one hand.
  • Take a picture of the serial number of this still mounted sensor (if you can). The picture should show numbers clearly but also suggest from the background what height it is at.
  • Next, grab the sensor to be deployed. Put the wind cups on and secure with the smallest allen wrench.
  • Take a picture of its serial number.
  • Set it on the platform near your feet.
  • Use the appropriate allen wrench to loosen the sent screws securing the old anemometer.
  • Use both hands to disconnect the sensor cable from the sensor body and then continue to hold the sensor cable with one hand to keep it from spinning away.
  • Use your free hand to remove the old aneometer from the cross arm fitting and place on the platform near your feet.
  • Continue holding the sensor cable with your one hand and grab the new aneommeter.
  • Put it into the cross arm fitting and then connect the sensor cable.
  • Now you can briefly relax.
  • Next, tighten up the set screws holding the anemometer in the cross arm fitting.
  • At this point things are looking good.
  • Return to the north side of the tower and with one hand on the big hose clamp and the other on the cross arm wiggle it back into position.
  • When it is in position, use the torpedo level to make sure it is level horizontally.
  • Use your eyes and then rotate the cross arm clockwise / counter clockwise until the sensor is proper vertically.
  • Tighten up the large hoseclamp and then double check your work on the prior two steps. If things have shifted, correct for that. Otherwise, you can now re-tighten all three hose clamps.
