Tower Remodel 2

Here are the items in the prioritized order.

First of all, you can add up labor of up to about 3 weeks x 2 persons.

Item 1: add more ground anchor support to each of the guy wire anchors

If it is better to replace the existing wires, I would like to include that work, too. Do you think what else we can do for the tower? e.g. the reinforcement/leveling the base of the tower, adding some pipes in the lower part of the tower. If you think we don't have further things, just adding the wires is fine.

Item 2: Purchasing a scientific mast. (for example https://www.campbellsci.com/ut30)

This is because even though we reinforce the tower perfectly, we cannot completely avoid the serious tower damage due to sever meteorological conditions. If the tower is severely damaged, most probably, we'll lose the opportunity of a couple of years measurements because rebuilding the tower takes much more time (getting another budget and planning, etc). Just in case, I'd like to have a scientific mast so that we can quickly restart the minimum level of measurements with a mast. Harazono san, Ueyama san are using the mast for their measurements in spruce forest so I think it's feasible and I know the mast itself is not so expensive, however, I am not sure this idea is a good alternate for the tower measurements and feasibility of installation at our super site. I'd like to hear your expert opinion. If it is feasible, I want to further discuss that we just purchase a mast frame and keep it in the storage or start construction work.

  • we have wire on hand for this. I'll need to buy thimbles and turnbuckles.
  • also buy parts for the tilting base.

Item 3: add a deeper bore hole (3 to 10 meters)

The investigation of deep soil layer is necessary to know the ground conditions and the potential impact on the tower structure. This work has been also approved however, I have no idea how much you would need to do whether it is possible within the target budget of $52,000. Please let us know the feasibility within the budget allowed.

Item 4 Re-arrangement of data logger, cables

- replace / upgrade the existing CR1000s or at least send the data loggers back for re-calibration of the analog measurement ports. - move the meteorological data logger from the shed to the base of the tower In addition, some cables from the tower to shed are exposed under the surface water (wet surface) . If there is a concern of power leakage or cable degradation, I'd like to ask to replace/rearrange them, too.

Item 5 Shed and board walk repair

- level the shed & repaint - Leveling of the board walk.

Item 6: A network of camera security motion camera for protection of the site

This is a good idea, so I want to put it in the task, but the camera itself is not very expensive, so if the budget is overran, I'll get it from other source of budget.

Item 7: Add more batteries to back-up power supply system in case of outage

I think the back-up power supply system is a good idea. Because some batteries' cost are included in the cost estimates of this year's site maintenance project. So please consider to buy from site maintenance project, first. Then you think it is better to add more, please add more batteries in this site reinforcement project.

Item 8: More Sensors

  • distributed soil moisture and temperature covering a larger footprint around the tower than is currently captured by our soil pits
  • same for heat flux (or perhaps wired)

I've purchased soil moisture and temperature sensors, five CS650 sensors and two soil heat flux sensors, HFP-01SC. I can get it a little more after April. Before the summer this year, I'll send it to you.

  • a couple multispectral cameras for summer drone flights

Because this is less related with the tower reinforcement, unfortunately, we cannot afford it by this project budget. However, I agree this is really interesting measurements. I'll put it in our wishing list.
