Pre-trip to do

  • Test out several HMP45C cables
  • update datapro files for all the sites
  • think hard about the hmp45s failing and what that might be about.
    • failing multiplexer?
    • control ports failing?
  • think hard about triage at K1, how to get everything back online.
    • review notes again from last year and look at pictures of the damage.

    • Look @ Snow (no recent data on web)
    • Rain -- Look for a chopped wire, no recorded precip for a while.
    • Need to update config files on datapro to reflect changed soil array.

    • Precip Orifice missing
    • snow thermocouples knocked over
    • AT/WS mast broken off & hanging by AT cable
    • Net Rad bent
    • 1m AT/RH upside down
    • tarp blown off and torn up
    • altar shield trashed
    • Moved 3m cable to 1m and rewired in logger box
    • didn't bother changing rad domes
    • Top crossarm sheared @ 1.25" to 3/4" coupling. Will need to bring out monkey wrenches to maybe bust that loose.
    • leaving 3m radiation shield (rm young is intact (minus cable) in battery box
    • precip stand parts are in battery box (tee and 3 hoseclamps)
    • SR50A was bumped in May 2012

8/5, Day 1

+ Depart Fairbanks (8am) for Nome (1pm)
+ Rent Truck
+ Swing by storage pick up:
  o bear spray

+ shop for food?
+ Go up to Anvil and check it out (if time allows)
  o check out wind speed.  Bring the backup anemometer from the Nome Storage
  o bring a spare diode
+ Check out Anvil City station
  o replace transducer of snow sensor
  o wind speed is reading 0 for the most part.
  o barometric pressure problem?

8/6, Day 2

+ Drive to Council (~70 miles one-way, ~2hours drive time)
+ Site Visit to Skookum (2/3rd along the way)
  o AT/RH is busted / disconnected
+ Site Visit to C1 Grid
  o Bring soldering iron and be prepared to solder the precip wire back together
  o get Vlad's soil temperatures back online. (loose wire?)
  o replace RM Young Anemometer
  o Level Rain gage
  o Level Net Radiometer
  o Change Net Radiometer Domes
  o Change Net Radiometer Dessicant
  o Change out Snow sensor
  o Look for chewage in soil temperature cable

  o All 3 AT/RH are bad.

+ Paddle across Kougarok River, unless stage is low (getting stuff into the canoe will be the most time consuming bit) 
+ Site Visit to K1 (~ 9 miles round trip from beach head)
+ Site Visit to K2 (~2 miles round trip from beachhead)
+ ??Site Visit to Kenji borehole (same area as Saito / Harada)??

8/9 Day 5

+ Drive to Kigluaiks? (about 1.5 hours from Nome)
+ Return to Nome
+ Meet up with NGEE Part 2

8/10 Day 6

+ Drive to Council
+ Visit blueberry site?  
+ spend QT with NGEE group
+ return to Nome

8/11 Day 7

+ Return truck
+ Return to Fairbanks (10am)


Notes from Kenji

Todd -> next to the gravel road see the pipe stick up. 10m one is very clear, no vegetation. the other is near willows. look for the top of th epipe then loggers are inside the pipe.

Kougarok
two locations tussock the other site is a bit lower flat f tussock harder to see than flat site.

Bear Creek
just before bridge there is some tundra. can park on the higher spot. usually right side of the lake next to the road. see white spruce at thermokarst site. bottom of the white spruce miliatry army box hobo is inside lake is next to road. Matt's thesis is the lake. go around the right side of the lake. nearest white spruce tree. may have a flag or a pipe.
