Tools

  • 5/16" Nut Driver (3 hose clamps to loosen)
  • 5/32" Allen Wrench to loosen nu-rail cross arm fitting
  • 5/64" Allen wrench to loosen wind cup set screw
  • camera / cellphone camera
  • optional: something to keep the loose parts from flying off the tower
  • optional: torpedo level
  • Marker

Process in field

  • The anemometers are on the south side of the tower at the end of a one inch schedule 40 aluminum pipe (I can't recall offhand one inch or smaller). They are the things with spinning cups.
  • The cross arms are secured to the tower with several hoseclamps. Loose but do not remove the hose clamps. There will be enough friction to hold the arm in place while loose.
  • in a jerky motion that may also require short back and forth rotations work the cross arm back towards the tower (moving the arm from south to north).
    • It often helps to keep the left hand on the furthest from the anemometer hoseclamp. The friction will prevent sliding but you can massage the hoseclamp and that will let you inch bit by bit arm to the north drawing the anemometer closer to the tower where you can reach it.
    • be careful on the back and forth rotations not to go all the way around. That complicates the natural wrap of the cable around the arm a bit.
  • once you can reach it, unscrew the data cable from the bottom of the anemometer.
  • let it tangle carefully.
  • use the bigger allen wrench to loosen just a bit the nu-rail cross arm fitting. One thing to watch for, the instrument has a sliding bit that will want to fall off for some reason. You will see if you attempt the procedure but if you're careful it won't fall off. (it doesn't typically)
  • with the set screw loose on the nu-rail fitting you can remove the anemometer.
  • Take a picture of the the old one's serial number and then place carefully on the platform.
  • use the smaller allen wrench to put the new cups on the new aneometer.
  • take a picture of the new one's serial number.
  • place the anemometer in the nu-rail fitting and tighten the set screw with the larger allen wrench.
  • connect the sensor cable to the bottom.
  • shimmy the cross arm back into original position.
  • use the torpedo level to make sure it is level horizontally and use your eye to make sure it is level vertically.
  • Done.

Process out of field

  • Submit PR for MetOne for an instrument recalibration and include a guess on cost of shipping.
  • Contact company for RMA number, fill out online declarations and ship.
  • Box up and send via UPS with RMA info on outside of box.
